About the Centre

Research Centre for the Sociology of Language at Uzhhorod National University

The centre provides a space for interdisciplinary research on language in society — at the intersection of sociology, linguistics, education, and cultural policy.

The Research Centre for the Sociology of Language — a structural unit of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at Uzhhorod National University — was established in May 2023. The Centre’s primary aim is to conduct fundamental and applied research in the sociology of language, examining the interconnections between language and society in the multicultural and multilingual environment of Transcarpathia and Ukraine as a whole.

Main tasks of the Centre:

  • scholarly research on the interaction of language and society, the language-policy situation — particularly in Zakarpattia Oblast — and the causal relationships between language and the state, language and ideology, language and politics, language and religion, and related topics;
  • involving university faculty, staff, doctoral candidates, master’s students, and undergraduates in research;
  • cooperating with civil society organisations, state institutions and organisations, enterprises of various forms of ownership, and educational and research institutions in Ukraine and abroad;
  • developing recommendations for public authorities and civil society organisations on the interaction of language and society and on the language-policy situation
