Teaching Ukrainian as a Foreign Language: Status and Needs

A study of how Ukrainian as a foreign language is taught in Ukraine and abroad — particularly in France, Germany, and Poland — together with an analysis of achievements and challenges in state policy in this field. The project continues a study launched in 2024 and commissioned by the Ukrainian Institute: in September 2025 a second stage began — semi-structured in-depth expert interviews and focus groups in these three countries. The audience includes teachers of Ukrainian as a foreign language from academic and non-academic settings, language-school managers, university students, and foreigners learning Ukrainian. The goal is to produce recommendations for Ukrainian stakeholders and to inform the Ukrainian Institute's plans for promoting the Ukrainian language worldwide.
