8th International Academic Conference “Slavic Languages and Contemporary Social Change”
In Olsztyn, Poland, the Sociolinguistic Commission of the International Committee of Slavists convened; Ukraine was represented by Halyna Shumytska, Svitlana Sokolova, Oksana Danylevska and Olena Ruda
On 7–9 September the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland) hosted the 8th International Academic Conference “Slavic Languages and Contemporary Social Change.” Within the conference, a meeting of the Sociolinguistic Commission of the International Committee of Slavists took place. Ukraine was represented by Prof. Halyna Shumytska, Prof. Svitlana Sokolova, Dr. Hab. Oksana Danylevska and PhD Olena Ruda.

During the meeting the Commission approved the minutes of the International Committee of Slavists (ICS) session held in Paris on 28 August 2025 during the International Congress of Slavists. Members heard the report of Commission Chair Prof. Małgorzata Święcicka on the Commission’s work during the 2025–2026 term and on the plan of scholarly and organizational activity for 2026–2027. New members were also admitted to the ICS Sociolinguistic Commission.
Prof. Halyna Shumytska’s conference paper, “The Impact of Forced Migration on Changes in the Language Situation in a Border Region: The Case of Transcarpathia,” was based on an analysis of in-depth interviews with internally displaced persons. The interviews began in 2023 within the international research project “Debates on Linguistic Diversity — Managing Minority Languages in Post-Soviet Ukraine,” led by Prof. M. Wingender of Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany), and continue within the work of the Uzhhorod University Research Centre for the Sociology of Language, with active participation by students, master’s and doctoral candidates in Sociology.
