In Rzeszów, Poland, the Sociolinguistic Commission of the International Committee of Slavists met with UzhNU representation

Ukraine was represented by Professors Halyna Shumytska, Head of the UzhNU Research Centre for the Sociology of Language, and Svitlana Sokolova of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language, NAS of Ukraine

On 12–14 September in Rzeszów, Poland, the 7th International Academic Conference of the Sociolinguistic Commission affiliated with the International Committee of Slavists took place. Sociolinguists from Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, Czechia, Lithuania and Ukraine presented papers on current topics and discussed the Commission’s work plan for the next five years — above all the 17th International Congress of Slavists, to be held in Paris in 2025, as well as other scholarly forums.

Ukraine was represented by Commission members Professors Svitlana Sokolova (Institute of the Ukrainian Language, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and Halyna Shumytska (Department of Sociology and Social Work, UzhNU; Head of the Research Centre for the Sociology of Language). Both scholars spoke about the specifics of researching the language situation in Ukraine under wartime conditions. As Svitlana Sokolova noted, “for us this is not only scholarship, but life itself.” The Uzhhorod researcher was invited to speak at the plenary session of the forum.

The meeting also elected honorary members of the Commission, including three Ukrainian linguists — Professors Larysa Masenko, Svitlana Sokolova and Yevheniia Karpilovska of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language, NAS of Ukraine.

For 17 years the Commission was successfully led by Professor Halina Kurek of the Faculty of Polish Studies at Jagiellonian University. As she concludes her university career, she has handed over her duties to Małgorzata Święcicka, Professor at the Faculty of Linguistics, Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz (Poland), who will assume the post after the Commission’s mandate for the next five years is confirmed at the Congress of Slavists. Her deputy is Professor Pavol Odaloš of the Faculty of Arts, Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (Slovakia).

It is this academic centre that will prepare and host the next scholarly meeting of the sociolinguists.
